How India and Russia Are Reshaping Eurasia’s Economic Landscape

2 Dec 2025, New Delhi: A recent global economic assessment by Harvard economist Jason Furman has shed fresh light on a transformation long in motion: while many major economies continue to wrestle with post-pandemic stagnation, India and Russia are advancing with deliberate, forward-looking strategies shaped by strong political leadership. His comparative analysis shows India as the only major economy rising decisively above its pre-Covid trend, while Russia maintains meaningful economic depth and resilience-clear reflections of the policy direction set by both nations’ top leadership.

India’s Structural Momentum: A Breakout Story Driven by Visionary Leadership

India’s economic performance stands out not because of a temporary rebound but due to a major structural uplift led by the reform-oriented and digitally driven governance approach of Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Under his leadership, India has transformed adversity into opportunity. After the pandemic-induced contraction in 2020, India not only regained lost ground but surpassed its pre-pandemic growth path by 2022. Projections now indicate a surge of about +5% above pre-Covid levels by Q3 2025-the strongest among major economies.

This momentum reflects the Hon’ble Prime Minister’s sustained focus on : digital infrastructure, strengthening India’s globally admired digital public stack, manufacturing reforms, including production-linked incentives that have boosted competitiveness, investment-led growth, attracting global capital, a stable macroeconomic environment, enhancing investor trust - young, energetic workforce, empowered through skill and social development initiatives. Together, these initiatives have propelled India into a position of exceptional post-pandemic leadership and future-ready growth.

Russia’s Enduring Economic Strength Under Strategic National Leadership

Alongside India’s structural ascent, Russia continues to display durable economic capability-guided by the long-term strategic direction of Hon’ble President Vladimir Putin. His focus on stability, national capability, and economic continuity has enabled Russia to maintain resilience even amid global uncertainty. Russia’s sustained performance is anchored in - strengthened energy networks, deep industrial and scientific capability, robust regional transport and connectivity frameworks. A long-term developmental vision that prioritizes sovereignty, self-reliance, and balanced growth. These elements demonstrate Russia’s capacity to maintain economic depth and influence across Eurasia, reinforcing its role as a key pillar in regional cooperation.

As Chairman of the SCO Business Council (India Chapter) and Ex-Chairman India-Russia Business Council, I see a clear and combined trajectories-shaped by the leadership of Hon'ble Prime Minister Modi and Hon'ble President Putin, hold immense potential to define the economic architecture of the wider Eurasian region. The SCO region’s future will depend on nations capable of providing continuity, direction, and shared benefits. India’s forward momentum under Hon'ble Prime Minister Modi and Russia’s enduring capability under Hon'ble President Putin form a partnership that embodies those qualities. Their synergy-rooted in mutual respect, complementary strengths and a long-term developmental vision-positions both nations to co-author a new phase of economic progress across Eurasia. As the world navigates a shifting economic landscape, India and Russia are emerging not merely as participants but as architects of a cooperative, confident, and future-ready regional order.

Significance of the Upcoming Annual India-Russia Summit

The upcoming Annual India-Russia Summit gains extraordinary significance in this context. With both countries demonstrating renewed economic momentum, the leadership dialogue between Hon’ble Prime Minister Modi and Hon’ble President Putin is expected to open new pathways in: Trade and investment, Strategic industries, Energy security, Technology partnerships, Regional transport corridors, People-to-people and business linkages

In alignment with the ongoing efforts of the highest authorities of both nations, I too have been contributing within my professional domain and responsibilities. On 24 November 2025, I had the opportunity to engage in a highly productive and insightful meeting with Mr.Valentin Makarov, President of RUSSOFT (Russia). Our discussions focused on formulating a comprehensive strategic roadmap to facilitate the entry of leading Russian ICT companies into the Indian market-especially those specialising in AI, IoT, Cybersecurity, Advanced Robotics, and Data Analytics. A major outcome of the meeting was the proposal to establish a Centre of Excellence for Emerging Technologies in India, envisioned as a dedicated hub for innovation, technology transfer, and co-development between Indian and Russian enterprises.

Hon’ble President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India on this December 5, 2025 marks a pivotal moment in the long-standing and robust India–Russia Strategic Partnership. This high-level engagement presents a significant opportunity to further strengthen bilateral cooperation across key domains, including trade and investment, defence, technology, energy, and cultural collaboration. The visit is expected to reaffirm the enduring mutual trust between both nations and pave the way for deeper, future-oriented cooperation that supports shared strategic and economic interests. This summit is not merely a diplomatic engagement-it is a moment where two rising economic forces align visions to shape the next era of regional growth.
