Development of the IndianRailway Sector:

A Vision for the Future

By Tribhuvan Darbari

The Indian Railways has always been more than a transportation network. It is a living, moving symbol of India’s economic resilience, social integration and national ambition. From connecting remote villages to enabling large-scale industrial growth, the railways have played a foundational role in shaping modern India. Today, however, the sector stands at a defining crossroads - one where incremental improvements are giving way to transformational change. In my view, the current phase of development in the Indian Railway sector represents not just modernisation of infrastructure, but a fundamental reimagining of how mobility, logistics and public service should function in a rapidly evolving economy.

Over the last decade, Indian Railways has embarked on one of the most ambitious reform journeys undertaken by any large public sector organisation globally. The scale of the network - over 68,000 route kilometres, millions of passengers daily, and a massive freight footprint - makes reform inherently complex. Yet, this complexity has not deterred progress. On the contrary, it has sharpened the focus on long-term planning, systemic efficiency and technological adoption.

Hon’ble Union Minister for Railways, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw Ji, recently highlighted IR’s Indian Railways’ next modernisation phase-2×25 KV electrification and upgrades across 7,000+ km of tracks to boost speed, safety and reliability for millions. His six resolutions from the recent Ati Vishisht Rail Seva Puraskar are truly inspirational for the railways fraternity and the industry: accountability, uncompromising safety, higher maintenance standards, AI-driven tech, talent upskilling and decisive departure from colonial-era mindsets, for a world-class system.

Our highly competent technical and professional teams at Texmaco Rail Engineering Ltd., Texmaco Rail Infrastructure Systems and Solutions and Bright Power Projects (India) Ltd., indeed seek inspiration from Hon’ble Minister of Railways vision and look forward to actively participate and contribute to the IR’s modernization plans.

In fact, I got a very positive response from the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation Business Council Secretariat. All of them were very impressed with our Hon’ble MR’s vision and modernisation plans of Indian Railways, and also, some of the SCO member nations look forward to benefitting from the Indian expertise.

From a passenger perspective, the railways are undergoing a visible transformation. Modern trains such as Vande Bharat Express symbolise India’s engineering capability and ambition. However, the real story goes beyond flagship trains. Station redevelopment projects, improved amenities, digital ticketing platforms and real-time information systems are collectively redefining the travel experience. Railways are no longer seen only as a mode of transport, but as a service ecosystem that must meet rising expectations of comfort, punctuality and transparency.

Technology, in my view, is the single most powerful enabler of this transformation. Digitalisation of operations, predictive maintenance through AI and data analytics, asset management systems and integrated command centres are redefining how such a vast organisation is managed. The future railway will not be driven by manual controls and fragmented data, but by intelligent systems that anticipate failures, optimise schedules and enhance safety in real time.

In my view, a modern, safe, efficient and globally competitive railway system is not just desirable - it is indispensable for India’s future. The journey is challenging, but the direction is clear. Indian Railways is no longer merely carrying the weight of history; it is steadily building the momentum of tomorrow.
