Energy Security in an Era of Rising Demand - India’s Pragmatic Path Forward

 By Tribhuvan Darbari

Energy security has always been central to India’s development story. Today, as the nation’s energy demand continues to rise at an unprecedented pace, this issue has taken on even greater urgency. The challenge before us is not simply about meeting demand - it is about doing so in a manner that is affordable, reliable and sustainable.

India’s energy consumption is expected to grow faster than that of any other major economy. This growth reflects positive fundamentals: industrial expansion, infrastructure development and improved quality of life. But it also places immense pressure on energy systems that must remain stable even amid global volatility.

As per my perspective, India’s approach to energy security reflects a conscious balance between ambition and realism. As demand accelerates, the national priority is not a singular focus on transition speed, but on maintaining system stability, affordability and resilience. India’s calibrated energy pathway focused on diversification, efficiency and gradual decarbonisation - demonstrates an understanding that energy security is foundational to economic growth, food security and social stability. By aligning energy policy with industrial needs and consumer welfare, India is shaping a transition that is inclusive, adaptive and resilient to global volatility, reinforcing its position as a reliable and forward-looking energy economy.

Rising Demand, Real Constraints

India’s energy demand growth is often discussed in abstract numbers. On the ground, however, it translates into very real operational challenges for industries, utilities and policymakers.

From manufacturing plants to agricultural inputs, energy availability directly affects productivity and costs. In my role at Paradeep Phosphates Ltd, I have seen how energy reliability is inseparable from food security. Any disruption in power or fuel supply has cascading effects across the value chain - from fertilizer production to farm output. This is why energy security cannot be treated as a transitional inconvenience. It is a non-negotiable foundation for economic and social stability.

The Case for Pragmatic Energy Transition

One of the most important themes emerging from recent energy discussions is the need for pragmatism. India’s approach recognizes that while the transition to cleaner energy is essential, it must not undermine reliability or affordability.

Rather than abrupt shifts, India is pursuing a calibrated energy mix - balancing renewables with conventional sources, improving efficiency and investing in future technologies. This balanced approach is often misunderstood as hesitation, but in reality, it reflects strategic discipline.

At Simon India Ltd, where engineering and infrastructure solutions play a critical role, we see increasing emphasis on systems that enhance efficiency and resilience. Optimizing existing assets, reducing losses and improving operational intelligence are just as important as deploying new energy sources.

Affordability as a Social Imperative

Energy affordability is not merely an economic metric in India - it is a social imperative. With a large and diverse population, energy costs directly impact household welfare, industrial competitiveness and inflation.

This reality demands careful policy design. Subsidies, pricing mechanisms and regulatory frameworks must protect vulnerable consumers while encouraging efficient consumption and investment.

What is encouraging is that India’s policymakers are increasingly integrating affordability considerations into energy planning. This ensures that the transition does not become exclusionary or disruptive.

Industry’s Role in Strengthening Energy Security

Energy security is not solely the responsibility of governments. Industry has a crucial role to play by adopting best practices, investing in efficiency and aligning with national priorities.

At Paradeep Phosphates, continuous efforts are made to optimize energy usage without compromising output. Similarly, at Simon India, the focus is on delivering solutions that enhance operational reliability across energy-intensive sectors.

These efforts, while enterprise-specific, contribute to a broader national objective: reducing systemic vulnerability while supporting growth.

Resilience in a Volatile Global Environment

Recent global events have underscored how interconnected and fragile energy markets can be. Supply disruptions, price shocks and geopolitical tensions have reinforced the importance of domestic preparedness.

India’s diversified sourcing strategy and focus on domestic capacity building have proven to be critical buffers. By avoiding over-dependence on any single energy source or geography, India has been able to navigate volatility more effectively than many expected.

This resilience is now being recognized internationally, positioning India as a stable energy destination in an uncertain world.

The Road Ahead

Managing rising energy demand while ensuring security is not a one-time challenge - it is a continuous process. It requires foresight, coordination and disciplined execution.

India’s strength lies in its ability to adapt without overcorrecting. The country’s energy strategy acknowledges constraints while steadily expanding options. This realism, in my view, is India’s greatest asset.

As industry leaders and stakeholders, our responsibility is to support this journey through responsible decision-making and long-term thinking. Energy security is not just about power and fuel - it is about confidence in the future. And India, through its pragmatic and balanced approach, is steadily building that confidence.

The recently concluded India Energy Week 2026 in Goa was truly remarkable. With participation from almost all leading global energy companies and institutions, the event brought together over 70,000 energy leaders and around 700 exhibitors from across the world. It clearly emerged as a premier global platform for dialogue, collaboration and meaningful business engagement.

As India moves rapidly towards becoming the world’s third-largest economy, our role in shaping the global energy demand-supply balance is becoming increasingly significant. What stood out during the event was the confidence the global energy community places in India - supported by our vibrant ecosystem of innovation, collaboration and deepening partnerships. India is steadily emerging as one of the most trusted partners across the entire energy value chain.

This progress reflects India’s pragmatic and balanced approach to long-term energy security, guided by the far-sighted vision and leadership of our Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji, and effectively driven on the ground by our dynamic and deeply knowledgeable Petroleum Minister, H.E. Shri Hardeep Singh Puri Ji. His clear focus on ensuring energy availability, protecting consumers and advancing sustainability - along with a well-defined energy transition strategy - is shaping India’s energy future with purpose and clarity. Having worked in the Ministry of Petroleum in the early 1990s - first as Private Secretary to the then Hon’ble Cabinet Minister and later as General Manager at ONGC Limited - and having had the opportunity to interact with global energy leaders even then, I was genuinely impressed by the scale, grandeur and outcomes of India Energy Week 2026. It marks a significant leap from where we once were.

My heartfelt congratulations to the organisers and to the CMDs of the state-owned oil and gas companies, whose collective effort made this landmark event a resounding success.
